Creative Media Project Development End of Semester 1 Evaluation

With the Sense of Space assignment concept, the films Phone booth (2002) & Taken (2008) was my inspiration of creating my Phone Call sound project. Both films have the main characters on their mobile phones and this helps the narrative move along as the characters use these as helping aids. With developing the idea of recording the phone call, I had a conversation with a number of people and focused on the background noises from the other person’s end; I would say everyday life was other inspiration of mine to create the project as I use my phone regularly. My target audience was for people aged 14-35 as this age group is the ones who use their mobile phones frequently throughout the day. As my project was about Sense of Space, I wanted to focus on the space of two people having a conversation on their phones in different parts of the world.

With the experimental film Voices, my influence to make a film like this is from the 2013 film Hummingbird. The Jason Statham’s character in the story has a hint of mental illness, which makes him hear and see things that are not really there. The target audience for this project is for people 18+ as the short film features mental illness ‘Schizophrenia’ that could offend or upset an individual. My partner and myself wanted to explore the illness and make people aware of it. Our aim was to get the message across that people should seek help if in any doubt they have the condition or anyone they know.

As I listen to the Phone Call as a completed piece, there is many things I would change to make it seem believable to the listener. I feel the way I (I voiced the main person on the phone) projected my voice in certain parts did not seem convincing that the character was on the phone. When I look back on the recording part, I think I should’ve recorded myself with a phone up to my ear so it felt that I was talking to someone.  The most positive part of the clip was the opening, the way the conversation gets started, and the background noise of the person on the other end. You can hear the static noise coming from the other person’s phone. I think if a member of the audience randomly started listening without any background of the project, that he or her would understand what the project is about and what it’s trying to achieve.

With Voices, I feel that we should’ve added scenes where it showed ‘destruction’ of something or scenes of unusual objects; something to make the short film a little more thrilling than it already is. I feel that the male voice is more ‘in your head’ direct than the female voice, which seems a cry for help. I guess the way my partner wanted it to be portrayed with the female character crying for help, as many people do tend to suffer in silence about the condition because they are too embarrassed to seek help.

With Phone Call I was the sound recorder.  My role was to capture ambiance sound and also record the voices of the characters. I felt that everything went to plan when it came down to audio. For this project, I did not have any problems with creating the project.

With Voices, I was the sound recorder of project. As there was an incident with my accommodation, I had to come home which affected the production days already planned. My partner and myself applied for an extension for this project because of the unseen circumstances. Our hand in date changed from 19th December to 22nd December. On 19th December 2014, I was unable to book out any sound equipment as the department was closed for the Christmas Period. I had to use an alternative device to record sound but there was no problem with the other device.

With the Phone Call project, I have learned many techniques on how to use the Zoom H4N and what to do to get quality sounds. As the sound recorder, I captured many sound clips of surroundings so my sound designer had many clips to create the piece. I believe capturing a number of sounds is a good way of playing it safe. From experience, I know that you should not capture loud noises because it can distort the audio; I did this with some of the sounds and the clip ‘peaked’.

With Voices, we decided to record the visuals first and the audio after. After we finished filming the footage, we edited together so I had a sense of what the people should say basing on the two characters face expressions and camera movement. I watched it with no sound and started to pinpoint where we would put the audio clips in certain moments. Doing the audio afterwards was practical as I did not want to waste my time getting audio that did not seem to belong to the video.

Phone Call was all perfect teamwork. We both had important roles to do and we both relied on each other to fulfill the roles we picked ourselves. I feel that me and my partner worked professionally to get the product finished. Voices was again a pleasant experience with my team member. I felt that our subject matter was very strong but we managed to tone it down for audiences.

Research into Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia can affect anyone usually from 15-35 year old. It is a long-term mental illness that can affect your way of living but some tend to live a normal life with the condition.

People who suffer with Schizophrenia tend to have these symptoms including:

  • hallucinations - hearing or seeing things that do not exist.
  • delusions - unusual beliefs not based on reality which often contradict the evidence.
  • muddled thoughts based on the hallucinations or delusions.
  • changes in behaviour.

1 in a 100 will experience Schizophrenia  but there is many ways to seek help and advice if you think someone is experiencing it or showing similar symptoms above.

Only God Forgives (2013)

Only God Forgives (2013) by Nicolas Winding Refn

Julian, a drug-smuggler thriving in Bangkok's criminal underworld, sees his life get even more complicated when his mother compels him to find and kill whoever is responsible for his brother's recent death. - imdb.com

Only God Forgives is a interest film with a strange concept but the storyline is linear throughout. There are certain scenes which takes you into the mind of the main character Jilian (Ryan Gosling) and it explores what he thinks of the world he lives in. The film tends to focus on lighting and scenery more than the characters. The locations are beautiful and it does show the audience how gorgeous the surroundings are but how bad every character is in the film. I feel that it is a great contrast of what's good and whats bad in the world.

The cinematography used many lighting gels to set the tone of the scenes and the audience can identify what the director wants to viewers to think. As this is experimental film, some scene have a conveyed meaning to them which is not clear for the mainstream audiences. This is not a film of everyone's taste but you do have to concentrate.

Under the Skin (2014)

Under the Skin (2014) Directed by Jonathan Glazer

A mysterious woman seduces lonely men in the evening hours in Scotland. Events lead her to begin a process of self-discovery. - imdb.com

For the task 2 project, I have been given a task to create an experimental three minute film based on a single object or word. I am in partnership with my lecture peer Jessy Busgeeth to create the piece. Since then, I have researched many experimental films and have gained inspiration from some.

Under the Skin is a 2014 independent film starring Hollywood Actress Scarlett Johansson. In the film, this young woman (Johansson) in van picking up men who instantly show an interest into her. Soon we see the men get lured into the woman's darkness to never return. The production is based in Scotland.

The film starts off with a strong use of sound which belongs to the 'Horror' genre. We then see images of objects that look like stars coming together to create a picture but it is never explained. The scene then cuts to a close-up of an eye and we begin to hear gibberish dialogue from Johnasson's character which I can only make out that she is trying to learn the English Language. The film stays on the eye for sometime before it cross-dissolves to a person on a motorcycle picking up an unconscious female from a field, then abruptly cuts to white room where Johnasson's character is stripping off the female of her clothes and putting them on. (below)
Unconscious woman laying in the white room

In this scene, the two character are shown in low lighting to show the audience that this is what they should be focusing on. I believe that having low lighting is also to hide the identity of the two. The act taking place in the scene is very sinister and I think the filmmaker chose that sort of lighting to depict that.

The woman driving around Scotland

The film mainly focuses on Scarlett Johansson's character picking up men around the local town and seduces them to go somewhere with her. When they accept the offer, the film cuts to them in a black room being taken by black water where they fall into a trance. After awhile, their skins starts to rip off from the body. Shortly after this, the film cuts back into the real world where the woman goes to lure another person in to her world.

The film never explains who or what the woman is but by the end you get somewhat of an understanding of what the woman wanted with the mens skin. Figuring out the film by yourself was more thrilling and rewarding as I feel if the film told us all the answers it would lose all the sense of it being experimental. The film contains minimal dialogue and the sound design played a big part as I felt that the sound speaks louder than words. The sound design is the best thing about the film as it felt like a horror without any jump scares needed to frighten people.

Not everyone would enjoy Under the Skin but I feel that the film will become a cult in years to come. It is probably one of my favorite films of the year and it deserves all the recognition it gets.

Practical Art of Motion Picture Sound

YEWDALL, David, Lewis (1950) Practical Art of Motion Picture Sound. 4th ed., Oxford, Elsvier Inc.

This book caters for people who have foundation level knowledge about Sound Design. The book shows you techniques that you can do when sound designing.  The book dives into the authors early years and how he became a sound recorder.

This book was helpful because it shows you a sound breakdown (how sound is edit) in films and detail how Yewdall used everyday items to capture sound for motion picture films. The book came with a DVD containing 1000s of sound effects.

Sound Design: The Expressive Power of Music, Voice, and Sound Effects in Cinema

SONNENSCHEIN, David (2001) Sound Design: The Expressive Power of Music, Voice, and Sound Effects in Cinema. United States of America, Michael Wiese Productions

This book was an excellent read because it goes into great detail about how important sound design is. It mentions that sound is very important to film as it gives the audience a sense of realism. The book talks about the sound design of Motion Pictures nowadays as it changed from Dolby Stereo to Dolby Digital and this has changed how people watch and ‘listen’ to films. The book contains many examples of Science Fiction films which have been praised when it comes to Sound Design.

In Chapter 1 (Origins and influences) goes into detail about Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) and how the film has influenced many other films to do with sound and how sound can work as a narrative aid. The chapter mentions a term called Sound Montage and how Walter Murch used it in THX 1138 (1971). Murch was inspired by 2001. He experimented with different sound techniques and mixed it with dialogue.

This book will influence me into thinking about the smallest of sounds that can be used in my own soundtrack. It was an interesting read because it goes into great detail about major blockbusters that have changed how we listen to pieces of text.

Sense of Space (Assignment 1) - Phone Call

Phone Call - Created by Rahul Jayakrishnan & Tony Ansell

Phone Call

Sound Design: The Expressive Power of Music, Voice, and Sound Effects in Cinema.

SONNENSCHEIN, David (2001) Sound Design: The Expressive Power of Music, Voice, and Sound Effects in Cinema. United States of America, Michael Wiese Productions

This book was an excellent read because it goes into great detail about how important sound design is. The author seems to have great knowledge of sound and how sound is applied to post-production and cinematography. Most importantly, the book gives you a good example on how you go about creating sound design. It also states that sound is essential to film in the 21st century because they go hand in hand to motivate the viewer to listen and watch.
In Chapter 8: Sound and Narrative it tells you how sound is important in films, in particular moments. “In its most noble and satisfying execution, sound will reveal something that the image does not or cannot” – I feel that this quote will help me understand where certain sounds will need to be in place as I am creating narrative audio piece. Having certain sounds in my audio project, however big or small, it can give a massive impact to the listener.

I feel that this entire book will help me make a professional standard sound project with its tips and advice.
